The Institute of Chartered Accountants in
England and Wales (ICAEW) has formed closer ties with a Middle East
and North Africa corporate governance institute and a UAE
university.
The ICAEW signed a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) with corporate governance institute Hawkamah. The two
institutes hope the partnership will help increase awareness about
the importance of developing and applying good corporate governance
practices in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The MoU is intended to encourage greater
transparency and disclosure, high quality financial reporting, and
the establishment of effective insolvency regimes.
The ICAEW has been heavily involved in public
policy work regarding insolvency in the UAE recently (see ICAEW works on UAE insolvency
overhaul).
The ICAEW and Hawkamah also hope the MoU will
help their work towards assisting businesses develop the skills
required to comply with the recently-implemented UAE Corporate
Governance Code.
The ICAEW contributed to the development of
both the current and previous versions of the UK Corporate
Governance Code.

Zayed University’s Institute for Community
Engagement (ICE) has become an ICAEW partner in learning. The ICE
is the arm of the university that provides outreach to the wider
community, supporting economic and social development of the
UAE.
The ICE will offer ICAEW’s Certificate in
Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) to its corporate
clients.
