The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) will allow the institute to offer its accounting credentials to non-US professional accounting bodies.

As a result, non-US based accountants will potentially gain access to the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF), Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) and Certified Technology Professional (CITP) credentials that AICPA offers.

AICPA said is a professional bodies wants to offer its credentials to members it would be required to have "stringent codes of conduct and eligibility requirements" in place and have a "sufficient national or international stature to maintain the rigorous criteria set by the National Accreditation Commission".

"With this vote, we now have the opportunity to drive broader awareness for some of the profession’s most demanding credentials while also leveraging those activities to create a global opportunity for US CPAs," AICPA senior vice president and chief operating officer Anthony Pugilese said.

Pugilese also said AICPA was exploring a pilot programme focusing on forensics and IT with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, which could begin as early as autumn, though details are still to be worked out by both organisations.
