A third of board directors at the top 194 companies listed on
the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) are chartered accountants,
according to research by the South
African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

In the past two years there has been a 7%
increase in the number of
chartered accountants taking on board director roles, while chief
financial officers at 75% of the companies surveyed are also
chartered accountants.

“In the two years since the last survey
there has been a remarkable 7% increase in the proportion of
directors who are chartered accountants, from 25% to the current
level of 32 %, SAICA chief executive Matsobane Matlwa said.

SIACA carried out the survey in November
and December 2010.
