Chen is said to have been instrumental in converging Chinese Accounting Standards with IFRS Accounting Standards.

Her involvement with IASB advisory bodies including the Accounting Standards Advisory Forum and the Emerging Economies Group has deepened her understanding of the board’s work, the regulatory body said.

Chen’s role at the Chinese Ministry of Finance as Deputy Director-General of the China Accounting Standards Committee involved leading research on IFRS Accounting Standards and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.

Previously, she was the director of the Accounting Regulatory Department at the Chinese Ministry of Finance, where she was responsible for developing and implementing Chinese Accounting Standards.

Chen’s five-year appointment follows the departure of Ann Tarca and Jianqiao Lu from the board.

The trustees announced plans to gradually reduce the number of members of both the IASB and the International Sustainability Standards Board from 14 to ten by the end of 2028, ensuring geographical balance during this transition.

IASB chair Andreas Barckow said: “Yu’s appointment brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the IASB. Her proven track record in aligning Chinese Accounting Standards with IFRS Accounting Standards and her active engagement with our advisory bodies make her an excellent addition to our team.”

Chen added: “I am honoured to join the IASB and to have the opportunity to contribute to the development of global accounting standards. I look forward to working with my fellow board members to continue the important work of enhancing transparency and comparability in financial reporting worldwide.”

Earlier this month, the IASB appointed Elena Poeschl as a new member of its Global Preparers Forum (GPF) for an initial five-year term.

The GPF provides input from the international community of financial statement preparers, consisting of members with extensive practical experience in financial reporting.
