The move was announced by Sarawak State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Malaysia.
The Premier made the announcement during a reception with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Malaysia stakeholders early in December 2024, underlining the importance of these fields, particularly in relation to carbon trading and environmental sustainability.
He highlighted the critical role that accountants play in ensuring transparency and proper valuation within these emerging sectors.
Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed the expanded responsibilities of accountants in the context of environmental, social, and governance frameworks.

By GlobalDataPremier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was quoted by the news publication as saying: “As long as you are eligible, you will receive free education to study finance and accounting because we need experts to audit our carbon, calculate carbon, and assess other intangible elements.
“These disciplines will adhere to international standards. An additional portfolio for accountants is sustainability. It is no longer just about the bottom line, it is about embracing a new portfolio.”
