The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has expanded its Tax Pro Account platform with new digital functions for businesses such as tax-preparation companies, accounting practices and other organisations.

Tax Pro Account, first launched in July 2021, was originally created to give tax professionals a secure online channel to manage authorisation relationships with their clients.

The latest update brings those capabilities to companies that use the Centralised Authorisation File (CAF) system.

The IRS said the changes are designed to improve visibility and control over CAF relationships, helping organisations that handle higher volumes of taxpayers manage authorisations more efficiently and reduce reliance on paper.

These new tools are intended to serve as a digital base for further enhancements aimed at tax professionals.

Sole proprietorships and other businesses that do not operate with a CAF number are not affected by this update, the IRS noted.

IRS CEO Frank Bisignano said: “This taxpayer favourable change will improve the way tax-professional businesses serve their clients.

“The improvement demonstrates that the IRS continues investing in technology improvements that reduce paper submissions, streamline taxpayer interactions and expand self-service digital options.”

With this release, designated representatives within a company can administer access to the business CAF, including defining which employees are permitted to act under the business CAF.

Practices can now link their business CAF number to their employer identification number through Tax Pro Account.

The update also lets authorised users view taxpayer information associated with the business CAF, within the scope of active authorisations, and view or withdraw those authorisations on behalf of the tax-professional business.

The move builds on enhancements introduced in 2023 and 2024 that expanded digital authorisation management and “act on behalf of” capabilities for individual clients.

The service now extends beyond sole practitioners to support professionals working within business entities that use a business CAF number.
