The gathering acted as a platform for discussions on ways to integrate National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with school commerce education.

Other topics included preparing students for new opportunities in business by using AI tools for teaching and assessment and enhancing commerce education that is more practical and connected to industry requirements.

Speakers at the event discussed the value of teaching commerce ideas from an early stage.

They noted this could help young people gain financial awareness and skills such as planning budgets, saving money, making informed decisions, collaboration, and understanding ethical considerations.

State Education Board officials highlighted ICAI’s framework for combining theoretical knowledge with practical training and industry experience. They also acknowledged international recognition of ICAI’s standards.

During discussions, a number of State Education Board leaders suggested signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with ICAI to outline formal cooperation to introduce and strengthen school-level commerce studies under Project Vanijya.

Areas mentioned included curriculum design, teacher orientation and maintaining the programme over time.

ICAI president Charanjot Singh Nanda said: “The Project Vanijya has been conceptualised to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 by nurturing financial literacy, business awareness and entrepreneurial mindset among students from Class VI onwards.

“The aim is to empower young students with early exposure to commerce, trade, banking, money management, taxation and ethical business practices, making education more practical, relevant, and future-oriented.”

Recently, ICAI approved updates to its code of ethics, broadening opportunities for Indian chartered accountant (CA) firms to collaborate with organisations outside India.
