The move expands the agency’s digital offerings, giving taxpayers additional ways to access IRS tools and account services via mobile devices.

IRS2Go had been in use for more than ten years, primarily allowing taxpayers to check refund status and locate free filing resources.

The newly launched IRS app extends these capabilities by incorporating a wider range of secure, account-specific functions.

With this new mobile application, taxpayers can now access selected account details and self-service functions.

These include checking the status of refunds and amended returns, viewing balance information, making payments and reviewing past payment activity.

Additional features allow users to view certain IRS notices and letters, and access available tax records and transcripts.

It also allows taxpayers to manage select profile and communication preferences, and request an Identity Protection PIN.

The IRS has indicated that further capabilities and services will be added to the app over time.

Existing IRS2Go users are not required to download a separate application, as those with automatic updates enabled will receive the new app through the standard update process.

IRS CEO Frank J. Bisignano said: “The new IRS app puts more services at taxpayers’ fingertips.

“It advances our digital-first agenda to meet taxpayers how and where they choose to interact with the IRS, whether at home or on the go.

“Our goal is to make IRS services easy to access and more consistent across all of our platforms.”

The IRS has also clarified that the app expands secure mobile access to selected individual online account services but does not serve as a replacement for IRS.gov or the existing IRS online account system.

Telephone and in-person assistance also remain in place for taxpayers requiring individualised support or facing issues that cannot be addressed through self-service channels.

Last month, the IRS launched a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report to provide users with a detailed view of filing and payment history.
