Businesses across Devon and Cornwall in the UK have called for stronger support on skills, infrastructure and workforce development following a roundtable held by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
The meeting in Paignton, Devon, brought together employers from across the South West, alongside Torbay MP Steve Darling.

The discussion focused on the key pressures and opportunities shaping the regional economy.
Companies highlighted a range of challenges including skills shortages, rising employment costs, transport and connectivity problems, apprenticeship funding constraints and the growing use of AI in the workplace.
Many employers reported ongoing problems in attracting and retaining staff.
They said shortages in the workforce are restricting growth and making it more difficult to expand operations.
Participants also raised concerns about a regional “brain drain”, with skilled employees leaving the South West to pursue roles elsewhere.
CIMA Policy director Ross Archer said: “Businesses across Devon and Cornwall are ambitious and optimistic about the future, but they are facing a range of challenges that risk holding back growth and investment.
“Whether it is workforce shortages, access to skills, transport connectivity or the rising cost of doing business, employers are clear that action is needed to unlock the region’s full potential.”
Apprenticeships were widely backed as an important route into work by the businesses.
However, participants voiced concerns about restrictions on Level 7 apprenticeships and the potential impact on workforce skills and business competitiveness.
The roundtable also examined ongoing difficulties around exporting. Businesses reported greater complexity, higher costs and increased administrative requirements linked to post-Brexit trading rules.
