The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has extended its mutual recognition arrangements with two US accounting organisations.

The institute signed the official Mutual Recognition Agreement with the International Qualifications Appraisal Board (IQAB), a joint committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).

The extension will apply from 27 January 2026 and remain in force until 30 June 2031.

NASBA president and CEO Daniel Dustin said: “Our relationship with SAICA is built on trust and shared expectations for the profession.

“This renewal strengthens that foundation and reflects the consistency between our countries’ regulatory systems.

“It also makes it easier for qualified professionals to navigate opportunities between our countries while maintaining the standards each of our organisations expects.”

SAICA said the updated arrangements confirm that the Chartered Accountant South Africa, or CA(SA), title and the US Certified Public Accountant (US CPA) qualification will continue to be regarded as substantially comparable.

According to the institute, the agreement keeps in place a simplified process through which suitably qualified accountants in either country can obtain the corresponding professional credential. The agreement will also support easier movement of professionals between the two jurisdictions.

SAICA CEO Patricia Stock said: “This agreement reflects the high esteem in which the CA(SA) designation is held globally.

“By renewing this partnership with NASBA and the AICPA, we are ensuring our members remain at the forefront of the global accounting profession while continuing to maintain the integrity, quality and brand of the profession in South Africa.”

In August last year, SAICA supported the advancement of AI in South Africa through its involvement in the development of the AI Maturity Assessment Framework.
