The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ) is in the final stages of negotiations with professional bodies in the UK on a new mutual recognition agreement (MRA), NewsDay Business reported.

The arrangement, expected to be signed by April, is intended to ease access for Zimbabwean–trained chartered accountants (CAs) to overseas markets and increase international recognition of local qualifications.

ICAZ president Emmanuel Mudefi said the talks form part of a broader strategy to promote cross-border professional mobility and strengthen the position of Zimbabwe’s accounting profession.

Mudefi was quoted by NewsDay Business as saying: “We are engaging one of the parties in the UK, who we believe is a strategic partner, so that we can conclude another mutual recognition agreement before the end of this presidential term.”

He noted that discussions with several international counterparts had reached an advanced phase.

“The draft agreement has been reviewed, and all that is left is for the parties to complete the relevant legal formalities before appending their signatures,” Mudefi added.

The ICAZ is also working on issues raised by its members regarding operational and professional challenges, with responses due to be announced by the end of this month.

“We have identified some of the challenges that are affecting them, and we are already responding to those challenges so that we safeguard the key priority of integrity and public trust,” Mudefi said.

He noted that the upcoming measures are designed to improve member support and overall professional effectiveness.

In addition, the ICAZ is pursuing a digital transformation programme aimed at modernising its systems and improving service delivery.
