The European Council (EC) has updated its rules, with the aim of streamlining EU legislation in the field of environmental reporting.
The decision was made to amend or repeal legislation around environmental reporting that is no longer applicable or relevant in an attempt to bring legal clarity, enhance transparency and reduce the administrative burden in member states.

The decision came after four years of work on proposals to remove obsolete legislation related to environmental reporting
The Standardised Reporting Directive was the main piece of legislation targeted in the recent move. The directive aimed to streamline the reporting obligations of all EU environmental legislation. However, The EC said it did not set out all reporting requirements, and most of its provisions had become obsolete.
The directive referred to a total of 28 environmental acts. Other legislative acts made use of the directive as well. Of them, one regulation, 9 directives and 23 decisions remained in force despite lacking any legal effect.
Bulgarian minister for environment and water Neno Dimov commented: “I am very pleased that ministers have approved this revision of legislation, which will make environmental reporting obligations clearer and more efficient."
This legislation will enter into force 20 days following its publication in the official journal.
