Five African PAOs join auditors general initiative for professionalisation of public sector accounting and auditing

By Vincent Huck

Five African professional accounting organisations (PAOs) have joined the Interim Oversight Board (IOB) of the African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) whose objective is to foster the professionalisation of public sector auditing and accounting in Africa.

The five PAOs were nominated by the Pan-African Federation of Accountants and are: the South African institute of Chartered Accountants (represented by their CEO Terence Nombembe), the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (represented by their CEO Edwin Makori), the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (represented by their executive for education, training and membership Rashied Small), The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (represented by fellow member Bitrus Nabasu) and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in Zimbabwe (represented by their past president George Mahembe).

They join the existing IOB membership of five auditors general from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan and Tanzania. The chair of the IOB is the controller and auditor general of Tanzania, Mussa Assad.

At the first IOB meeting to include both representatives of the PAOs and the auditors general held earlier this month Nairobi (Kenya), the IOB agreed on the importance of engaging with a broad range of stakeholder to ensure the legitimacy of the professionalisation initiative.

The IOB also agreed to focus on understanding the good professionalisation activities that have taken place in various African countries, and to engage further with the African Union Commission.

The next meeting of the IOB is scheduled for October 2017 where the IOB expects there will be a further broadening of stakeholder representation.
