AFROSAI-E pledges to support the professionalisation of public sector auditing and accounting in Africa

The Interim Oversight Board (IOB) of the  African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) held its first official meeting to review its strategy to foster the professionalisation of public sector auditing and accounting in Africa.

While AFROSAI-E doesn’t intend to become a professional body and therefore to award qualification or deliver professionalization programmes, the IOB agreed in their first meeting earlier this month, that the organisation would seek to create an inclusive process to support efforts of governments to professionalise.

The IOB also determined its objectives as follow:

  • To drive the importance and create awareness of the aim, objectives and expected outcomes of an Africa-wide professionalisation programme in public sector accounting and auditing
  • To establish multi-stakeholder mechanisms for leading and overseeing the development and delivery of the initiative
  • To facilitate the development of a communication strategy and effective relationships between stakeholders and potential stakeholders including international organisations, regional groupings of applicable political and managerial decision makers and national institutions
  • Engage with potential donor agencies on funding

The IOB was elected in 2015 and consists of the auditors-general of Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan and Tanzania. The chair of the IOB is the former auditor-general of Tanzania, Ludovick Utouh.
