CPA Canada fraud survey finds cybersecurity concerns linger

Businesses are believed to be working to protect personal information yet Canadians still have concerns about cybersecurity, according to a survey from Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada).

The results revealed that 66% of Canadians are concerned about identity theft, a decline from 74% in 2016. Also, 72% agreed that businesses are believed to be doing their best to safeguard personal information, which is up from 66% the previous year. However, 73% of respondents are concerned that Canadian businesses are vulnerable to cyberattacks over personal information.

"In this era of ever-evolving technology and data management challenges, it is good to see Canadians recognising the efforts that the business community puts into protecting personal information," Cairine Wilson, vice-president, corporate citizenship, CPA Canada said. "It's also encouraging that the respondents understand that risks do remain."

The 2017 CPA Canada Fraud Survey was conducted by Harris Poll between 31 January and 8 February 2017 of a national random sample of 1,001 adult Canadians.
