Brazil requests to become an associate of OECD Competition Committee

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and one of its government agency overseeing economic power abuse have each send a letter to the The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) requesting for Brazil’s associate membership to the OECD Competition Committee.

The first letter was sent from Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 7 December to OECD secretary general Angel Gurría and the second was delivered on 8 December during the Global Forum on Competition from Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) president Alexandre Barreto to OECD head of competition division Antônio Gomes.

Brazil is not an OECD member but participates in its deliberation as an observer and presents written contributions. The Brazilian government however has a clear strategy to participate more actively with the OECD.

The OECD was contacted for comment but did not respond at the time of publication.
